Week of September 12th

Happy Friday ~

In phonics we worked bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, and sl. In reading we read fiction and nonfiction books about apples. We did some fun activities with apples today. Most of the kids in our class prefer red delicious.  I think they wanted to make an apple pie. On Thursday we took a break from apples to celebrate International Dot Day.  The kids really enjoyed the DOT candy and using it in math. We continued to write personal narrative pieces and use a graphic organizer to help layout our details. In science we continued our unit on magnets and learned about attract and repel.

Week of September 5th

Happy Friday ~

We had a busy week for being short.  In phonics we worked on th, sh, wh and ch and had our first 10 words on our spelling test.  In reading we talked about character traits. We also attempted to write out first comic strip and wrote opinions on should the pigeon be allowed to drive the bus or not. Students were asked to state their opinion and provide three reasons for that opinion. We continued to write personal narrative pieces and use a graphic organizer to help layout our details. The organizer addressed the “Wh” questions: Who? What? When? Where? How?    In science we started our unit on magnets and learned about attract and repel.

Weekly Update ~ August 22nd

This week we enjoyed five different stories written by Kevin Henkes. We talked about all the elements of a story. We also compared text to text, text to self and text to world.  In phonics we worked on the “sh” and “ch:  sound. We continued to write personal narrative pieces and worked on making sure the reader had a clear picture of what the students are sharing by using adjectives.  In science we continued our study of the weather and focused on the four types of precipitation, rain, snow, hail and sleet. We also starting our CogAT practice.  You can check out the practice sheets that we have done together in your child’s yellow folder.

Next week’s (Aug. 29th) I will be emailing you the homework assignment. One part will be in CTLS and the other on Seesaw.  Please let me know if you need a hard copy.

Next Week…

Phonics:  th, sh and ch     No spelling test this week due to the CogAt.

Reading:  We will be reading both fiction and non-fiction books about weather.

Writing:  Personal Narrative

Math: Word problems and place value (Numbers 11 ~ 19)

Week of May 16

We had a fun student appreciation week.  The students enjoyed a special STEM lesson, creation station, extra recess, popsicles, camping/reading and game day.  I know they really enjoyed building forts to read in and making s’mores.  Please check out the pictures on your child’s Seesaw account.

It is so hard for me to believe that we only have three more days together.

Upcoming School Wide…

The last three days of school Monday, May 23rd, Tuesday, May 24th and Wednesday, May

25th are early release days.

Wondering about lunch next week? For Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, students will eat in the cafeteria on Monday and Wednesday and in our classroom Tuesday. Monday will a hot lunch and Tuesday/Wednesday will be sack lunches.

No Backpacks on the Last Day

Just a reminder that students will bring all their supplies and materials home on Monday, May 23rd and Tuesday, May 24th. The Transportation Department and our wonderful bus drivers request that students do not bring anything with them on the bus on the last day of school. If your child is bringing lunch to school that day, please have everything be disposable.

Final Report Card in ParentVue 5/27

Rocky Mount will not be mailing report cards home this year. The final report card will be available in ParentVue on Friday, 5/27 at 4:00pm.

This week in school…In phonics we reviewed the FLOSS rule. In reading we read compared fiction and nonfiction with rabbits being the main subject. In writing we worked on our narrative writing with realistic fiction. In math we worked on missing addend/subtrahend and word problems. In social studies we started learning about George Washington Carver.

Week of March 28th

This week in school…In phonics we worked with vowel team ee sound. In reading we read compared text.   In writing we worked on our narrative writing with realistic fiction. In math we worked on strategies for adding 3 numbers and word problems.  In social studies we started out unit on Ruby Bridges and learned about how brave she was when she was in first grade.   We wrapped up the end of the week with hockey game and a Humpy Dumpty STEM project.

Week of March 21st

This week in school…In phonics we worked with vowel team oo sound like in the word look. In reading we read animal books. In writing we started our narrative writing with realistic fiction. The students brought home their opinion pieces and I hope you took the time to read them. In math we worked shapes and word problems. In science students did their own animal research and came up with the habitat to support their animal. They did a wonderful job on their habitats.

Week of March 14th

This week in school…

It is hard to believe that we completed our 3rd Nine Weeks of school!  The students had a great week in school, and they worked very hard.   In phonics we worked with soft/hard c and g. In reading we read a lot of different Leprechaun books and worked with cause and effect.   In writing we completed our opinion writing.  In math we worked shapes and word problems.  In science we started our unit on animals. Report cards will be available March 23rd in ParentVue.

Week of February 28th

We had a great week back after winter break.  It is hard to believe that we only have a week and half before the end of the third quarter.  This week we read a lot of Dr. Seuss week and worked on comparing and contrasting.   In phonics with worked with -le endings.  In writing we continued to work on our opinion pieces.  In math, we worked on addition with number bonds, double digit addition, subtraction, unknown number and word problems.  In social studies we completed our unit Theodore Roosevelt and his impact on National Parks.

Week of February 14th

First, thank you all for your support for Rocky Mount Foundation.  Our class came in 2nd place and won 2 free attractions each at Stars and Stripes.  They brought home their cards today so if you need something to do over the break.  Thanks also for the volunteers that helped to put on the Fun Run.  The kids really enjoyed the fun run and the movie today.

This week we have had a Cinderella theme with reading.  We five different versions of the story and we discussed point of view. In phonics with worked with ow and ou and students made their first word search which they will exchange with a friend on Word Search Wednesday.  In writing we continued to work on our opinion pieces.  In math, we worked on addition with number bonds, double digit addition, subtraction, and word problems.  In social studies we started our unit on Theodore Roosevelt, and we learned how the teddy bear came to be.  We also did a scavenger hunt in book about President Roosevelt.
