Happy Birthday to Kaycie (9/19) and Cash (9/25)

We wish you the best!

We had another exciting week at Rocky Mount.  Our class did a wonderful job staying quiet during 3rd and 5th grade testing days.

In reading, we worked on character traits and retelling.  You might want to discuss character traits over the fall break. We read three different version on the “The Three Billy Goats Gruff.”  We also worked with nouns (people/things) and putting words in ABC order from words from our reading.  We went to the learning commons and checked out good fit books.  We will discuss more of information with you during conference week. In phonics, we worked on final consonant clusters like nt, ng, nk, and nd.  We continued to work on narrative writing and using our transitional words to sequence our stories. In math, we worked on telling time half hour/hour.  We practiced reading clocks by playing the game, Clocks in a Row. They really enjoyed playing the  game.  Toward the end of the week, we worked on the number line strategy for adding and subtraction.  We used small cats and frogs to help us with some fun word problems.  We are still working on place value.   In social studies, we continued our study on Benjamin Franklin.  We are made a timeline of Ben Franklin’s life for the hallway.  When we return we will be making our own  individual one in computer lab.

On Tuesday, after fall break, I will be sending out information about conference week.  Conference Week is October 17th – 21st.  Students will be getting out half days that week.

Also, Book Adventure and First in Math will be available during the break if your child would like to do them.

I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe break.  I look forward to seeing everyone back on October 3rd.

Your child finished taking the CogAt today.  YEAH!!!  They did a terrific job. Rocky Mount Elementary had 100%  perfect attendance in both 1st and 3rd grade for all three test days! 🙂  Starting tomorrow our third grade neighbors will be busy starting IOWA assessments until Wednesday of next week.  Our class will need to work hard to stay quiet so that they can do their best.  Please help remind your child to be respectful of the 3rd grade test takers and to keep the noise level very low.

In STEM lab groups got to try out their structures to see if they would be able to hold up to rain and keep their duck dry.   The children really enjoyed planning and making their structures.  Here are a few pictures but you can catch your child’s group rain/dry test video on their See Saw account. Please check them out.20160915_125312 20160915_125339 20160915_125344 20160915_125403 20160915_125428 20160915_125441 20160915_125450

We are still learning about the contributions and character traits of Benjamin Franklin in social studies.  We are still working on personal narratives in which students need to recount two or more sequenced events and include some details regarding what happened.   In phonics, we worked on s family blends at the end of words and reviewed s family blends at the beginning of a word. In reading, we are working on retelling, nouns, verbs, and how to analyze a character (character traits) in a story.  In math we continue to work with time (hour to half hour)  and measurement.  We are also working on place value with  identifying a dime and understanding that 10 pennies equal a dime and pennies are worth one cent (ex. 1 dime and 3 pennies = 13 cents – 1 ten and 3 ones). Some kids are having problems when counting the total amount moving of money from a dime to pennies.  We will continue to practice in class but would encourage you to practice at home.   Next week, we will be back to having normal homework.  Keep up the great work on Book Adventure and First in Math.

We had a fantastic week and I hope you have a fantastic weekend!

With the conclusion of our first Science unit on the water cycle and weather, Social Studies is underway. Vocabulary which will be covered includes, but is not exhaustive, some of the following terms: publisher, inventor, leader, scientist, public servant. Benjamin Franklin will be the major historical figure covered during this unit.

In Writing, we are approaching our  of 7th week our narrative writing unit. As this bend of writing tapers down, students will continue to listen to the stories of published authors, evaluate their own stories, refine the editing of their work, partner with peers and conference with teachers to assist in this process.  In Reading, we worked on compare and contrast of two different versions of Old MacDonald by completing an graphic organizer about the story elements (characters, setting, and plot).  We also got to practice our fluency skills by doing reader’s theater.   You can see you child’s video on their See Saw account.  We did share a couple of videos on all the accounts.

In Math, students continue to work on number sense, place value, addition, subtraction, word problems, and measurement.  The students really enjoyed measuring things with butterflies and unifix cubes.   Students started doing First In Math.  They really seem to enjoy it!  Our class is in first place for first grade at our school!

Next week, we will start CogAT testing on Tuesday and it will run till Thursday.  Please have your child arrive at school on time well rested and with a full tummy from a delicious breakfast.  We also will  have a chance to visit the Learning Commons next week so have your child return their books for new ones.
Looking ahead … mark your calendars for the Lassiter Homecoming Parade, next Friday, 9/23.

Let me know if you have any questions and have a great weekend!

Thanks to Mrs. Hall (Ana Rose’s mom) for being our mystery reader today.  You can check out the picture on your child’s SeeSaw account.

This week’s we started First in Math.  Your child got to log in and play in the computer lab.  They really enjoyed it!  Their logins are coming home Monday in their homework folder.  I would encourage them to play at least twice a week.
On Thursday, we had a Guidance lesson on different careers and the tools people use for those jobs. Next week, students will visit Career Centers in our Media Center, spearheaded by our wonderful counselors … and, thanks to the help of so many wonderful volunteers, year after year, Rocky Mount pulls off a very fun-filled, informative exposure to professions and prospective career opportunities for our students. This year will be no different.

In Writing, our young authors continue to hone their personal narrative writing skills, reviewing the elements of good writing that have been introduced, practicing daily, and continuing to work on new skills with each lesson. We closed out the week with lessons reviewing editing, incorporating proper punctuation and capitalization. Students have had opportunities to share their story with their writing partner.  During reading we worked on main idea and supporting details in both large and small groups.  Students also did an independent graphic organizer with the main idea being about their families with supporting details on what made their family so special.  You can find them in their yellow folders.  In phonics, we worked on the r-blend family.

In Math, students have been exposed to place value, addition, and word problems. We have begun discussing coins, while still applying the concept of tens (dimes) and ones (pennies), making comparisons and counting amounts.  You can practice at home by having your child count dimes and pennies.

In science, the class had the pleasure  reviewing weather concepts, as students discussed types of weather, seasonal clothing, and instruments that are used to measure rain, wind and temperature.  The class also enjoyed the season’s secret bag activity.  We also followed the tropical storm Hermine on the news.   We will finish up weather next week and start social studies.

Thanks for all that you do! I’m  just a phone call or an email away, so please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns.

Enjoy the long weekend with your family!

Go Dawgs!
