We do’t even know what to say! Mrs. Vincent, Mrs. Gallagher, and I thank you so much for the amazing week of goodies and surprises.  We feel so lucky everyday and this week truly was the icing on the cake!

In Reading we continued to work in inferences and making predictions.  In phonics we worked on “y” as a vowel.

Math: In Math, students worked on puzzles, using small sections of the 100-chart, word problems and brushed up on telling time. We also did some challenging Valentine problems.

Social Studies:  We finished up our unit on Theodore Roosevelt.  I  think the kids found it interesting on all the items that he had at the White House.  After the break we will start on continents and oceans.

The students really enjoyed Valentine’s Day and the reading, writing, and math activities we did with special treats.

Upcoming:  Read Across America Week

Monday (2/25): Wear a Hat Day

Tuesday (2/26): Dress in Animal Print Clothing

Wednesday (2/27): Wear Green

Thursday (2/28): Wear Crazy Socks Day

Friday (3/1): Dress up as your favorite book character

I hope you and your family have a wonderful February break! Read lots of books and enjoy lots of family time!  I will see everyone on Monday, February 25th.

PJ’s on February 15th

Students and staff are invited to wear pajamas on Friday to raise money to support The Center for Children and Young Adults (CCYA). Students and staff are asked to donate $1.00 for this worthy cause. Pajamas should be appropriate for school and should allow students and staff to take care of their personal needs. Thank you for supporting CCYA!

♥On Thursday, February 14th, we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day at school. I have planned learning activities and some fun surprises for that day, including a Valentines card exchange. Please have your child bring in a decorated bag or box, in which to collect their cards. Please make sure your child’s name is clearly written on their decorated box or bag. We currently have 21 students in our room. The class list was sent home. Cards may be made at home or store bought. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns! ♥

Congrats to Chloe – her writing piece was chosen to represent Rocky Mount 1st graders to complete against all  other first grade representatives  from all Cobb County schools.

Congrats to Owen for turning is his Six Flags Reading log

Writing: This week, students started writing opinions on things they like for example: fruit or vegetables for the year, favorite thing to do for recess, favorite story or favorite movie. We are spending time practicing capital letters, punctuation, and applying all the spelling rules we know. The writing format for the body of their compositions has remained the same; however, in the conclusion, our young writers have been imploring the reader to take action and do something. Closing their writing pieces with this persuasive tone has proven to provide a pretty powerful ‘punch’ at the end.

Reading: In Reading, we compared The Three Little Pigs to the The Three Shapely Pigs.  We also read the True Story Of The Three Little Pigs. Students analyzed similarities and differences between the  stories. In addition to participating in small reading groups, targeting certain skills, such as reading comprehension, determining the main topic, author’s intent, making inferences,  predictions and analyzing character traits. In phonics we worked on long i digraphs with the following spelling patterns: igh, ie, i, and y. We worked on reading and spelling words with these spelling patterns.

Math: Students worked with pennies and dimes, practiced with 10 more/10 less/1 more/1 less. Students also worked on word problems and how to express how they got their answers in writing.  We will continue to practice with double digit addition and subtraction. Next week, we will practice telling time.

Social Studies: We finished our unit on Lewis and Clark and their trip to the Pacific Ocean. We started learning about Theodore Roosevelt.  We found out how the teddy bear got his name.
