In Reading, we are discussing informational books on bats, continuing to hone reading skills/strategies in the areas of: making predictions, determining story elements, problem & solution, making connections (text, self, & world), and visualization.

We continued to work on our informational writing. Students completed their owl books and are working on their informational books on bats.

In Math, students are working on understanding different ways in which quantities and equations can be expressed on either side of the equal sign, analyzing whether the number sentences are equivalent, and providing a written explanation of what more/less is needed to make a false equation true. They are working out problems, going from one whole and two parts (sum = addend + addend) and learning about how to identify the missing part when they know one addend and the sum. Students will be working on subtraction sentences.

Thanks to Mrs. Bailey (Robert’s mom) for being out mystery reader this week.

It was great meeting with you all during Conference Week, to discuss your child’s progress. The Lexile framework is a scientific way to match readers with text that will continue to challenge them. Lexile levels provide insight into both a student’s reading ability and text complexity, helping to strengthen students’ literacy skills as they are paired with reading materials that are individually matched to their own personal Lexile level. For more information on the Lexile framework, the different codes, etc., click on the link below to view an informative, 6-minute video on Lexile.com. The site provides a wealth of insight on the topic of Lexile levels, Lexile codes, and grade level conversions.

We had a wonderful time at the book fair. Mrs. E and Mr. Carr did a AWESOME job!

The second 9-week grading period is well underway. During this nine weeks in Writing, students will be working on preparing their informational chapter books. Ask them to inform you what topic they consider themselves an expert on. In Reading, we will have a variety of seasonal texts to share and on which students will be working on story elements, sequence of events, comprehension activities, developing an opinion with supporting evidence, and making personal connections to the stories.

During this nine weeks in Math, students will be exposed to the vocabulary of addition and the various ways in which word problems can be worded to express that addition is the operation needed to solve the problem. We will also be working on concepts of equality and learning multi-step, numeric equations, with the understanding of the steps necessary to determine true/false. And in Social Studies, students will be learning more about Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson and furthering their knowledge in this area.

HAPPY FALL!!!

Next week is Conference Week  I am very much looking forward to meeting with you to discuss your child’s progress! Please be aware that we will be on Early Release, with school ending two hours earlier, at 12:10 pm each day. ASP will be available. No clubs meet next week and additional changes to our daily schedule will be as follows:

Specials from 9:50 – 10:20

Lunch, from 11:35 – 12:10

Also, the Book Fair will be taking place next week.  We will be going be going on Tuesday, October 16th at 10:30 to 10:55 if you would like to join us.

This week in Writing, we ended our personal narrative unit and wrote about our favorite things to do during the fall.  We will start informational writing next week.

In Reading, we’ve been discussing sequencing of events. Looking to next week, students will be exposed to a few fictional and informational texts on owls. Students will analyze sensory details, discuss story elements, and apply knowledge of text features during our learning segments.  In phonics we worked on the FLOSS rule at the end of a short word, with one short vowel, double to , f,l,s sometimes.

In social studies we talked about how people earn and income.  We also talked about goods and services.

The first nine weeks flew by! I have so proud of everyone’s growth.

I am so excited to see what the this nine weeks holds for us!

October 5, 2018

It sounds like everyone had an amazing fall break! I can’t believe next Wednesday wraps up our first nine weeks together. Time flies when you are having fun!

Next week the class will be finishing up their personal narratives.  We have been working on adding feelings and details to our stories (capital letters/punctuation/spaces). We will be embarking on informational writing next, where students will have the opportunity to write about a topic which they know a lot about and consider the differences/similarities between fictional and informational texts on the same topic.

In Reading, we will start working on determining the text importance and identifying the sequence of events.

In Math, students worked on addition, subtraction, related facts and word problems. To solve word problems remember to think about what the problem is asking, drawing a picture, using the information given, writing an equation to match, and then answering the question!  Math games are a huge hit with the students and provide the chance for peer interaction while honing their skills.

In Social Studies, we worked on locating our city, county, state, nation, and continent.

I look forward to meeting with everyone soon!

Upcoming:

Wednesday, October 10th – Bruster’s Night

Thursday, October 11th – Early Release, 12:20 Dismissal

Monday – Friday October 15 – 19th – Conference Week, 12:20 Dismissal

I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful weekend! 🙂

GO BRAVES!

October 5, 2018

Here are some important dates to remember for next week:
Tuesday, October 9, is Picture Re-Take Day.
Wednesday, October 10, is Walk to School Day. Unfortunately, we only have one location for walking this year. The construction on the new gym at Lassiter is beginning so we will not be able to use their back parking lot. Families are welcome to park at the Goodwill on Shallowford to walk together to school.
Thursday, October 11, is an Early Release Day. Dismissal will begin at 12:20p.m., and buses should leave the school by 12:30p.m.
The back stadium parking lot at Lassiter High School will be closed effective Sunday 10/7 due to construction. All car riders will have to be dropped off and picked up from the front of the school so expect heavy delays around Lassiter High School during their arrival and dismissal times.
