Thanks to Mrs. Judge for being our mystery reader today especially for Dylan’s birthday.

First in Math Ranking: Still maintaining first place in 1st grade at The Rock.

Our own Camden Knudsen was a TV star today on morning announcements.

Writing: The narrative writing unit continued this week. Some students are starting to write a series of books using the same main character.
Reading: Students read passages and detailed words that lead them to draw a conclusion. Students completed centers.
Math: Students continued working with fractions, reviewed 3-D objects and completed daily word problems in their interactive notebooks. Number Talks provided a review of locating the missing addend or subtrahend in an equation.
Science: We have been watching to see how our radishes grow. Right now they are doing better in the cups than outside.

We closed out the week with a visit to the Media Center, where, our students had books read to them by Mrs. E, before checking out new books. Please continue to encourage your child to read — read to them, read with them, and model just how much enjoyment you get from reading books, magazines, newspapers.

Performing Arts

The Performing Arts Program in Cobb County is funded by donations from the parents and families from across Cobb County School District. It provides opportunities for Cobb’s children (K- 8th grades) to experience uniquely rewarding performing arts that might otherwise be unavailable to them. The program seeks to spark curiosity, broaden awareness of the Arts, stimulate minds and emotions, foster creativity and inspire a lifelong interest and love of the arts with far-reaching effect. This year at Rocky Mount we were fortunate that, through your donations, we were able to provide the following enriching experiences for all our students:

Kindergarten and 1st Grade – Wendy Bennett from the Georgia Ensemble Theatre performed “SING” for our K and 1st grade students. Students were engaged in performances of songs that included jazz, Broadway, folk songs, and others. Students explored musical sounds and concepts that included scat singing, rhythms, and pulse.

2nd Grade – 2nd Grade students travel each year to see a performance of the Atlanta Ballet. Students experience the beautiful coordination of live music with live dancing through the amazing talent and artistry of the Atlanta Ballet

3rd and 4th Grade – Dave Holland from Beatin’ Path Rhythms presented his workshop “Pop! Zing! Boom!” to our 3rd and 4th grade students. Each homeroom class spent a full hour with Mr. Dave exploring the science of sound through multi-cultural instruments from around the world!

5th Grade – 5th grade students travel to hear a live performance of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra each year. Through the ASO’s creative approach students experience some of the greatest classical music from history performed by some of the best musicians in the world!

ALL STUDENTS (k -5) – Dave Holland from Beatin’ Path Rhythms performed his interactive assembly program “Drumming Up The Stories” for the entire Rocky Mount student body. Mr. Dave guided students through the history of drumming as a means of communication. He then engaged students in the telling of several folk-tales making use of traditional and non-traditional instruments…all performed by the students!

Bus-A-Move

Next week will be the return of “Bus-A-Move” with more prizes and more music to help get students excited about riding the bus to school in the morning!

First in Math Rankings: First place in first grade at Rocky Mount.  Sina is in first place for 1st grade at Rocky Moun with 5182 points!!!

Reading:  We started our unit on drawing conclusions. We had to read passages and gather clues to draw our conclusions.  We continued to meet with reading groups.  The class is doing very well on taking their test on Book Adventure to earn their points.  I would like to offer a big shout out to Ana Rose Hall for having 9285!  Way to Go Ana Rose!!!!

Writing: Narrative writing continued. Students worked on expanding their stories by adding chapters to their narrative books and considering making their initial narrative part one of a series. They incorporated dialogue, speech bubbles, and worked on adding feelings and expressing emotions through writing.

Science Lab: Our class learned about Earth Day and they came up with ways to help take care of Our class made bird feeders that wiIt was a pretty wormy experience!  Students painted some beautiful water color images of cotton plants.

Last but not least, I want to commend my wonderful students for their patience and perseverance with peacefully working, while our neighboring 3rd grade friends are completing their End of Grade Assessment, The Georgia Milestones. Our class has done a wonderful job of maintaining peace for the first two to three hours of the school day, which is a tremendous feat, but not beyond the realm of possibilities which they can successfully tackle.

First in Math Rankings: Our class is standing strong, still in first place for Rocky Mount.  Playing First in Math is optional for homework.
Writing: We started off the week writing about what we did over spring break. Students continued to work on their narrative writing using their editing checklist to review and revise their work. Daily, I continue to conduct writer’s conferences with each student. To see the growth that our young writers have made over this school year is tremendous. It’s been really great to witness our students, taking concepts learned in class and applying them outside of the classroom.
Reading: This week’s we continued to focus on cause and effect. We also talked about how illustrations help readers. What might an author’s purpose have been for selecting certain images to include in a passage? Those are some of the questions that students pondered this week. Reading text and identifying details gleaned from the text versus information learned from photographs which accompanied the text are also concepts which students analyzed during this learning segment. At the end of the week we did our Reader’s Theatre. Check out the videos on your child’s SeeSaw account.

Math: During Number Talks, students solved addition problems with 3 numerals and shared strategies for problem solving with their peers. They read and analyzed word problems, demonstrating multiple ways to show their work, when providing the answer. Students worked on 2D and 3D shapes and introduction into fractions. Today, we did some “PEEP” addition. We also want to thank Alton for bringing in Peeps today to share with the class during our math time.

Science: We moved from George Washington Carver directly into plants. Students discussed the parts of a plants and what they need to grow. We drew and labeled plants in computer lab. I have heard that some students have planted their grass and that it is doing very well.

Our class supported the Atlanta Braves and welcome them into their new stadium.

Go Bravos!

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend 🙂
