REMINDER: NO SCHOOL February 19 – 23
Enjoy Winter Break with your family!

Thanks to Mrs. Lohlein (Anni’s mom) for being our mystery reader Thursday.  The kids really enjoyed the book, The Very Fairy Princess Follows Her Heart  and the sweet treat.

First in Math Rankings: Our class is still maintaining first place for first grade at Rocky Mount! Woohoo! Winter Break is a great time for your child to get some math skills practice in, so remember to have him/her play. Also, don’t forget about Book Adventure!

In Reading we continued to work in inferencing and making predictions. We also did Readers Theatre for Student Teacher Interview. You can check out the videos on SeeSaw.

Math: In Math, students worked on puzzles, using small sections of the 100-chart, word problems and brushed up on telling time. We also did some challenging Valentine problems.

Science: We learned about shadows. We also did an experiment involving candy hearts. We placed them in water, soda, and vinegar. The first candy to dissolve was the one is soda. The candy heart took two days to dissolve in the vinegar. The one in the water is still holding on.

We had a wonderful time with our STEM Shadow project. Check out the videos on your child SeeSaw account.

The students really enjoyed Valentine’s Day and the reading, writing, and math activities we did with special treats.

Enjoy your winter break and I will see everyone on Monday, February 26th.

♥On Wednesday, February 14th, we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day at school. I have planned learning activities and some fun surprises for that day, including a Valentines card exchange. Please have your child bring in a decorated bag or box, in which to collect their cards. Please make sure your child’s name is clearly written on their decorated box or bag. We currently have 18 students in our room. The class list was sent home. Cards may be made at home or store bought. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns!  ♥

◊First in Math Rankings: We are 1st place for first grade at Rocky Mount!

This week has been a full and exciting week for students, culminating with our visit to the Science Lab and our weekly trip to the learning centers.

Writing: This week, the focus was on our favorite thing to do at recess. The writing format for the body of their compositions has remained the same; however, in the conclusion, our young writers have been imploring the reader to take action and do something. Closing their writing pieces with this persuasive tone has proven to provide a pretty powerful ‘punch’ at the end.

Reading: In Reading, we compared The Three Little Pigs to the The Three Shapely Pigs. Students analyzed similarities and differences between the two stories. We also read about penguins. Students independently completed flip books or passages about penguins in addition to participating in small reading groups, targeting certain skills, such as reading comprehension, determining the main topic, author’s intent, making inferences, analyzing character traits, along with more fundamental skills work in Phonics and certain grammatical skills.

Math: Students worked with pennies and dimes, practiced with 10 more/10 less/1 more/1 less. Students also worked on word problems and how to express how they got their answers in writing. We did a math code and got friends to use the code to get to our secret number. We will continue to practice with double digit addition and subtraction. Next week, we will practice telling time.

Social Studies: We talked about Lewis and Clark and their trip to the Pacific Ocean.  The kids also worked with a partner putting together a time of the life of Lewis and Clark.

Science Lab: We got to work on sound.  We listened  to objects in eggs and working with a partner tried to figure out what was inside.

Check out pictures and/or videos for the week on SeeSaw.

Have a good weekend!

February 2, 2018

We had another exciting week at Rocky Mount.

Reading: In Reading, we read some wonderful books this week. Students analyzed similarities and differences. They also worked on cause and effect. They related the text to self. We started our unit on making inferences (metacognitive strategy) and predictions (comprehension strategy). We will continue to work on those skills until winter break. In smaller groups, students worked on comprehension, supporting their answers with textual evidence, making inferences and connections to literature, in addition to skills practice in areas such as word recognition, grammar, fluency, and Phonics. Independently, students completed learning activities in centers.

Writing: This week, the focus of opinion essays was to finish writing on our collections, favorite book, toy, or stuffed animal. We also wrote about if we would rather eat fruits or vegetables for the rest of the year. We worked with an editing checklist to make sure that essays are legible, follow the discussed format, and are persuading the reader to take action and do something.

Math: Students are continuing to practice with greater than, less than, and equal to, honing their listening and following directions, when provided with a series of verbal clues. They are also working on concepts of division/equal distribution of items among groups and on the skill of depicting answers to math problems in various ways.

We completed the week with activities around Groundhog Day. We also predicted correctly that the groundhog would see his shadow. We also had a special groundhog treat.

Our class also got to see the drama club performance Friday afternoon. It was wonderful! Our class really enjoyed it and our own Emily Hill plays a zebra in the play. A must see for the whole family taking place Friday at 6:00 pm and Saturday at 6:00 pm

Thursday was Famous Americans day. The children did a wonderful job on their presentations and performance. Check out videos on your child’s SeeSaw account.

I hope everyone has a safe and warm weekend!
