First in Math Rankings: This week in first grade at Rocky Mount, we’re still in the lead for 1st place; 12th in the school. More important than our standings is the skills building and math fluency that consistent practice provides. Remember to have your child log-in to play First in Math.
This week in Writing, students continued working on informational writing. This week’s focus centered around writing information on elephants. We wrote five chapters and our books included a table of contents. Using Pebblego and books, students will also be stepping into a teaching role, as they research their on topics and write about them.
In Reading, along with exposure to various concepts of grammar and Phonics, fluency practice and skills building, with different Thanksgiving related books. We discussed story elements, event sequencing and analyzed character traits. Students explored text to text, text to self, and text to world.
In Math, this week’s focus included: interpretation and analysis of word problems; solving problems with 3 addends; addition sentences which include 3 digits; problem solving a number sentence to determine an unknown number; applying knowledge of related math facts to solve for an unknown number and completing all four equations of a fact family, just to list a few.
In Social Studies, we finished up our continents and oceans unit. After the Thanksgiving break we will be learning about Thomas Jefferson.
This week, students also experienced a Guidance life lesson with the wonderful Ms. Marks, and enjoyed some tech-time using the Graph Club program in the computer lab which showed the data that each child collected. With your help, week by week, students come up with questions from which to survey their classmates, and in class, we experienced something similar, using our on-site technology. Students were thoroughly engaged.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Enjoy your break – see you back November 28th.

Happy Birthday to Michael Bradshaw!  We hope you have a wonderful day!

Remember our Thanksgiving Lunch, is scheduled for Friday, November 18 at 12:00 pm. A sign-out sheet will be made available for those families who wish to check their child out after lunch. Please let me know if you are NOT able to attend lunch with your child, so that I can make arrangements to join them for lunch.

In keeping with Rocky Mount’s annual tradition, this year’s Veteran’s Day celebration was fantastic!. This year, one student from each grade level represented their class by posing a pre-selected question to the veteran who was the keynote speaker — our own  Lieutenant Colonel Bonnie Goldsmith (school secretary). Our class’s questions were: How do you train for the military? Where do you live?  Kenric, our class representative ,was very poised and did an excellent job of presenting the question!  After the big program, Mrs. Goldsmith came by our class so that we could think her for her service.

In Science, students have been working with magnets. They have been enjoying seeing what items magnets attract and those which they repel. In Social Studies, we started our study of the seven continents and five oceans. This week we had a visit to the STEM Lab, where students will have the opportunity to design kites. You can see some of their planning on See Saw.
In Math, students will continue to practice solving word problems and providing a written explanation of their thinking. They will work with true/false statements of addition and subtraction problems and try their hand at creating some of their own true/false statements
In Reading, students will compare and contrast, discuss story elements, make connections (text-to-text, text-to-self) and engage in reflective literary discussions. The class enjoyed reading A Turkey for Thanksgiving.
In Writing, students are still working on creating informational passages (i.e. How To passages and I’m an expert on …). Creating introductions and conclusions will be an area of focus for this week. Students will continue the practice of sharing their writing with peers and preparing cover sheets for their final drafts. They have been so proud of their chapter books!

Next week, students will visit the Computer Lab, have a Guidance lesson with our fabulous counselor, and visit the Learning Commons. Please be sure to return all books, so that your child can check out books to read over the break.

Enjoy your fall weekend

Fall Centers

Thank you all so much for volunteering to help in the classroom and for donating items.  The children had a wonderful time doing their pumpkin STEM activity and graphing with candy corn.  It would not have been possible without you help and support. 🙂

Thanks to Mrs. Gilreath (Kaycie’s mom) for being our mystery reader today. The kids really enjoyed the stories.

Rocky Mount’s annual VETERAN’S DAY CELEBRATION, for active vets and their families, is Friday, November 11. There will be an assembly in the cafeteria to honor our vets and active military. Each grade level was asked to prepare a question to ask a vet, and our class’s question was selected for our grade. Questions will be read during the day’s program.

I hope all of you to took the opportunity to watch the videos on SeeSaw of the class doing reader’s theatre on,  The Little Old Lady. The kids really enjoyed doing them.  If you haven’t seen them –  I would encourage you to do so.  Continuing the seasonal theme, in Reading, students will be exposed to a few Thanksgiving stories. They will continue to practice in story elements: character(s), setting, plot, beginning, middle, end, problem, and solution.  Seasonal poems will also be read, and students will work with this genre of text in an interactive format, breaking apart the text to extrapolate details and further their learning through the application of prior knowledge around syllabication, rhyme, etc.

In our Writer’s Workshop, students will continue to work on not just stating details in passages which they’ve created, but also incorporating descriptions to help their readers to visualize that which they (the writer) have written. Students will continue to work on informational writing.  The will begin to write informational books including a table of contents.

In Math, students worked on the equal sign this week. and making sure both sides were equal to make it a true statement.   Students were exposed to “related facts,” learning that the relationship between addition and subtraction can be used to double check final answers. They  have math fact fluency drills to check for speed and accuracy. As they continue to progress in this area, having a strong grasp of their basic math facts will prove to be particularly important when solving multi-step, word problems. A solid math facts foundation will help to free up space in students’ mental filing cabinet, as they advance through problem solving steps and as they continue to advance in school.

Some pictures were posted on your child’s Seesaw account but here are some showing the students balancing equations.

In science we have been learning about magnets.  The kids have had a wonderful time testing to see what the magnet will attract to and repel.  We also went to the learning commons today to come up our rock bands and plans for making our own instruments.  Students had to come up with a plan to make a drum and 2 string instruments. We will be into continents and oceans soon.

Thanksgiving Lunch is Friday, November 18th from 12:15 to 1:00. Reservations are required. A flyer will come home in your child’s folder If you are unable to join your child, please just drop us an email to let us know, so that we can coordinate having lunch with them. Thanks!

Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Enjoy your family time!
